Shopping List for Basic Sewing & Notions
Having the correct tools for your sewing basket will make it easier and help you achieve a professional-looking finished results. Sewing notions are never ending, but you don't need them all. As your sewing skill grows, you'll add to your basic and find the tools you will love.
- Scissors - All purpose dressmaker sheers used for cutting material. 8" to 9" recommended.
- Tape Measure - Available 60" to 120" length.
- Seam Gauge - Idea to create accurate hems, spacing and markings.
- Straight Pins - Standard point available in variety of lengths, thickness and heads. Used to hold fabric together temporarily before stitching.
- Tomato Precision - The tomato is filled with wood sawdust to keep needles sharp. Magnetic pin cushion are available for the stainless steel straight pins.
- Seam Rippers - Available in small or large size. Commonly used to remove stitching.
- Thread - Available in wide variety of weights and types. Consider the quality, weight and color according to your project. Start with basic colors - white, black, navy and natural.
- Marking Pencils or Pens - Idea to use to mark those symbols on a purchased patterns, wide variety of types and brands to correspond to your project needs.
Shopping list for Basic Quilting
Provide the must-haves for anyone getting started. The initial investment will seem costly but these tools will save for years.
- Rotary Cutter - It is a rolling razor blade on a handle to be used along side a mat. 0.45mm cutter recommended.
- Rotary Mat - Comes in all sizes, andisais a self healing plastic mat. 18"x24" recommended.
- Rotary Ruler - Ruler specifically used with the rotary cutter and mat. Available in different size. 6"x24" recommended.
- Scissors - Four-to-five inch long shears with a sharp tip. Used to clip threads.
- Pins - Extra long, fine glass head pins.
- Thread - White, natural or gray colors of good quality.
- Seam Ripper.
- Iron.
- Sewing machine.
